AND I WAS - REPEAT WAS - GOING TO CUSTOMIZE ONE OF MY YUU SHAKUHACHI, BUT THEN I LEARNED ABOUT SHUTEN-DOUJI AND HIS INEXPENSIVE MASTERPIECES!

| Kouta-san - "Shuten-douji" - starts with the ABS plastic Yuu shakuhachi, as they come a little rough from the factory. And he does his preliminary wet/dry sanding in his bath room, then, while holding the flute on the end of a broken fishing rod, he applies the red cashew lacquer base coat (although he can do other colors, of course) |

| Unlike paints, urushi and cashew lacquer do not air dry. They cure from humidity, heat and UV rays. Here's my first Hane Yuu, hung up to cure, and a number of others racked up in Shuten-douji's custom work process. |

This
leaf skeleton will be covered by some five or six coats of clear lacquer
before completion. But you have to hold one of these masterpieces in
your hands - and play it - to really begin to comprehend the value of
these instruments. Nothing else on the market touches them in beauty
and sound quality for anything remotely like these prices.
And, no, before you get suspicious, I don't get anything for promoting these flutes for Shuten-douji, not even a discount when I order one. I would not want anything! I believe in Shuten-douji and his shakuhachi! Like I said, I have one now and one on the way! |
